To the Atheist

Published by paradise1 at 12:15 pm under Islam, Sayings/Hadith

Heres an interesting story related to us by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani:

(So an Egyptian grad. student is sitting at the da’wah table at the University of Toronto, when a fellow student walks up to him..)

Atheist: “I don’t believe in god”

Egyptian grad. student: “I do not believe in the god that you don’t believe in, but I believe in a God that you do not know about”

..SubhanAllah, this is definitely something to ponder over.

This is a wonderful point you raise and one that Shaykh Hamza Yusuf stated once too. When one states he does not “believe in God,” one should ask them what exactly they mean, as we may not believe in that “God,” either. Imam al-Ghazali once stated that when meanings are set there is no use quibbling over names. Our belief in God - or Allah - is in the eternal beginingless and endless Creator of the universe who has the power to do all things contingently possible, knowledge over all things, will, and is completely different from his creation.

Their “God,” is often a man (or the third of three), or an anthropormophic entity, who is either powerless (God can’t prevent the Devil from doing…) or is not necessary to exist, who does not create evil, and who is like his creation. Of course we do not believe in such a false theology!

    Assalamu alaikum

That statement by the Egyptian brother was absolutely profound. It really made me think and I was dumbfounded by the wisdom contained within it.

The only other quote whose veracity I can attain to is the “The only culture punjabis have is agriculture.” I told my parents that joke and my dad laughed and mom didn’t.

    barrrrrrr

A better representation of the exchange between the atheist and the graduate student would be thus:

Athiest: I don’t believe in God.

Egytian grad. student: I don’t believe in the God you don’t believe in. I believe in a God you don’t know about.

Atheist Interesting. Who is this God. Tell me something about this God.

Egyptian grad. student He is the only true God. All others who are attributed with Godhood are false. He is Allah. There is nothing like unto him. He is “the eternal beginingless and endless Creator of the universe who has the power to do all things contingently possible, knowledge over all things, will, and is completely different from his creation.” *

Athiest Oh, I knew about this God. I don’t believe in him either.

Egyptian grad. student May Allah guide you to the straight path

Athiest Your intial comment was interesting. You said that you too didnt believe in the God that I didnt believe in. You are an “athiest” regarding some Gods. I am an atheist regarding all.

As one famous biologist once said, “we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”

    * Quote from blog poster Omar.

I’m an athiest. Which means I don’t believe any diety. So I accept the first half of the shadda.
Well let me know about this god and I’ll tell you if I have heard about it.

    Ma Salama

I think the implication Jermiah, is if you knew about Him you would believe :)

  7. Jermiah Johnsonon 28 Sep 2007 at 1:38 pm

I do know Him. I used to be a muslim.

I think the quote above sums up the conclusion I have come to in my contemplation of theology. i.e.:

“we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”
That famous biologist was Richard Dawkins, no dout.

Every believer, of what ever diety they beleive in, sees their God as the best and the highest type of God that our human mind could comprehend.

I incline to Dionysus more than Allah.
    But thats just me. :)
